6 Things That Medicare Doesn’t Cover
While Medicare can be great to have, there are some things that it doesn’t cover. Thus, Medicare Advantage plans are available, which offer extra coverage for those with Medicare. Aarp Medicare Advantage plan coverage, for instance, extends to things like dental and vision care. There are also other plans, such as unitedhealthcare medicare advantages programs, humana medicare insurance plans, and aetna medicare plan coverage. However, before determining whether or not a Medicare Advantage plan is right for you, it’s important to know what Medicare won’t cover. Keep reading to learn more:
1. Routine foot care
Are you someone who gets routine foot care done or is at least looking into it? Well, we regret to inform you that this care, also known as podiatry, typically won’t be covered by medicare. The treatment of calluses and corns—alongside toenail trimming—are all services that you may have to pay out of pocket for.
2. Dental care
Like routine foot care, medicare usually won’t cover routine dental care such as cleanings. Dentures and fillings, too, generally aren’t covered. However, all hope is not lost: there are some Medicare Advantage plans that cover dental care such as x-rays, cleanings, and oral exams, oftentimes with an annual dollar cap. Thus, it may be beneficial to look into Medicare Advantage plans if it isn’t feasible for you to pay high costs out of pocket for dental care—especially if you’re someone who requires frequent dental visits.
3. Vision care
In the same vein, some vision care isn’t covered by Medicare. The difference between vision and dental care, however, is that some vision care is indeed covered. Specifically, Medicare will cover the costs of eye examinations that are required to diagnose and treat specific eye related conditions. Unfortunately, though, Medicare does not extend this coverage to things like contact lenses and eyeglasses.
4. Cosmetic surgery
Unless otherwise medically necessary—like breast reconstruction after a mastectomy—Medicare will not foot the bill for cosmetic surgery. Thus, if you’re looking at getting work done like liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, breast augmentation, and likewise, it’s important to know that any given one of these procedures probably won’t be covered.
5. Acupuncture
While most traditional Chinese medicine isn’t covered by Medicare, Medicare will indeed cover acupuncture. But there’s a catch: it only covers up to 12 visits in 90 days, only for those with chronic lower back pain. If you show improvement, Medicare will cover an additional 8 acupuncture visits. Predictably, if you don’t show improvement, these additional visits will not be covered. Clearly, Medicare’s coverage of acupuncture is very conditional—thus, it earns a spot on this list.
6. Outside medical services
If you need medical attention outside of the United States, Medicare likely won’t cover the costs of whatever aid you receive. Therefore, if you end up moving outside of the United States, it’s probably beneficial to cancel your Medicare plans—while you can still hold onto them, they’ll be redundant while you’re abroad.
