10 Worst Cities for Skin Health
If you have tried numerous moisturizers and visited every dermatologist in town for your skin, it is time to consider a change in the residence. Some cities are worse than others because of UV exposure, increased pollution rates, average temperature, smoking prevalence, and the non-availability of good doctors. The following are ten of the worst cities to live in for skin health.
1. Fort Worth, Texas
iIt is not surprising that Fort Worth, Texas, gets a hefty dose of UV rays. The city has a low number of dermatologists per capita. Fort Worth has many tanning beds, too, which is not soothing on the skin.
2. Las Vegas, Nevada
The city of partying is not a good place for the skin. Las Vegas experiences long, hot summers. It also has the fifth largest population of smokers, exacerbating skin conditions and aging.
3. Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles can be a nightmare for the skin. It has the highest number of ozone days–about a hundred each year. The semi-arid climate makes it easy for the skin to become dry. Also, the city has an insufficient number of dermatologists per capita.
4. Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte is the tenth worst city for ozone pollution, and the lack of airflow makes it seem highly polluted. The lack of airflow also makes Charlotte hotter, and sun exposure is harmful to the skin.
5. Phoenix, Arizona
Combining perennial sunshine and a high number of ozone days make Phoenix, Arizona, bad for skin health. The arid climate and outdoorsy lifestyle worsen existing skin conditions and increase the risk in those who do not have any. There is a high prevalence of skin conditions and, sadly, fewer dermatologists.
6. Sacramento, California
The capital of the Golden State is a city where 33% of the population gets sunburns at least once a year. Skin cancer-related deaths are also relatively high here. The active population is vulnerable to harmful UV rays because of high-ozone days.
7. Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis has one of the laziest populations and has significant rates of skin conditions. Sadly, it is also under-served by dermatologists, with just three per 100,000 people. The climate is hot and humid, and the long summers make people wear less clothing and subject them to UV radiation.
8. San Diego, California
San Diego is dry and sunny and quite close to the beach. The all-year-round beach weather makes people expose their skin, and skin damage is more likely with the high ozone days. There is also a greater prevalence of tanning beds in the city.
9. Tulsa, Oklahoma
One of the highest skin cancer death rates in the country is in Tulsa. Unfortunately, the baseball caps the people love do not protect the nose, lips, and ears and leave them exposed to sunlight. The sun can be pretty intense, so invest in high-quality sunscreen.
10. Toledo, Ohio
This midwestern city has humid summers. Though not scorching, it is unpleasant on the skin. Skin cancer prevalence is high, as is the population that smokes. While not unsatisfactory, the skincare you can get in this state is ranked only 121 in the country.
